About this event

At Wakamiya Sumiyoshi Shrine, the 'Rabbit and Peach Lantern Dedication Festival' will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026 (Reiwa 8). Occurring midway through the year, this festival aims to ward off accumulated misfortunes and spiritual fatigue, embracing the rabbit's agility and the peach's power to dispel evil spirits associated with the shrine, lighting up one's own inner vitality along with the flame of the sacred lantern to pray for vitality and peaceful days. Originating from the Rabbit Day Festival held in the Edo period, it is conducted as a summer-limited ceremony. The Shinto ritual begins at 19:30, and anyone can attend. Ritual participants will receive a kinpeirei sacred bell. While seating inside the main hall is limited, participating near the hall is also possible. Even if you cannot attend the ritual in person, you can apply to have your name inscribed on a dedicated lantern or have prayer strips written and offered on your behalf. The light of the dedicated lanterns for this festival will remain constantly illuminated from July 30 to around August 20, allowing visitors to worship in the evening, absorb the light, and feel fulfilled. This continuous lighting also includes the intention to honor the spirits of ancestors and express gratitude. For attendees of the ritual who wish, sacred peach fruits (actual fruits grown within the shrine grounds) appearing in mythology will be distributed in limited quantities. Furthermore, limited amulets available until August 20 include the 'Name-Inscribed Dedicated Rabbit and Peach Lantern' and the 'Yuki-Waki Charm' granting innate courage and harmony. You can write your wishes on prayer strips and tie them to the lanterns. The ritual offering fee is 3,000 yen for a dedicated lantern + prayer strip, or 5,000 yen for a dedicated lantern + prayer strip + Yuki-Waki Charm + special prayer (when applying via web membership or flyer).
