Oshiko Shrine Autumn Festival
Japanese name:生石神社秋祭り
📅 Sat, Oct 17, 2026 - Sun, Oct 18, 2026
About this event
The Oshiko Shrine Autumn Festival is held every year on the third Saturday and Sunday of October. The highlight of the festival is the heroic jostling together of portable shrines (mikoshi). Young people carry the red mikoshi enshrining the deity Onamuchi no Mikoto, while older participants carry the yellow mikoshi enshrining Sukunahikona no Mikoto, clashing and jostling them violently against each other. In addition, the humorous ritual called 'Akahayashi' features a figure dressed as Sarutahiko, the divine guardian, who demonstrates divine power by swinging a stick to chase away and scatter the youths chanting around him.
