Kokuzo Horin-ji Temple Urushi Festival
Japanese name:虚空蔵法輪寺 うるし祭
📅 Fri, Nov 13, 2026
About this event
In the Heian period, Prince Koretaka, an ill-fated imperial prince who lost the imperial succession and is considered the founder of woodturners (kijishi), secluded himself at this temple and was said to have received teachings on the lacquer manufacturing method from the main deity, Kokuzo Bosatsu. In connection with this legend, a memorial service to pray for the improvement of lacquer craftsmanship is held every year on November 13. Lacquer craftspeople and related personnel from all over Japan visit to worship and pray to the Buddha of Wisdom for the advancement of lacquer techniques. Following the service, a Kyogen dedication performance by the Shigeyama Chuzaburo troupe will also take place, offering an opportunity to experience traditional culture. This festival is held with gratitude toward Kokuzo Bosatsu, revered since ancient times as the guardian deity of the lacquerware industry and artisanal crafts, and serves as a valuable opportunity to pay respect to lacquer and pray for the passing down of skills.
