About this event
This special exhibition commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Nara Prefecture Complex of Manyo Culture and the World Cultural Heritage inscription of the "Asuka-Fujiwara Capital Sites." As the political and cultural center from the late 6th century to the early 8th century, the Asuka and Fujiwara region served as the stage for state-building in ancient Japan, its image passed down through numerous historical texts and the "Manyoshu." This exhibition unravels through paintings how modern and contemporary artists perceived and depicted this land. Visitors can sense the perspectives of artists who combined their unique imaginative worlds with findings from archaeological and historical research. Since the Meiji 20s (late 1880s–1890s), the Asuka and Fujiwara region has been chosen as the subject for numerous works, and the museum's collection is part of this lineage. It is a valuable opportunity to experience the artists' viewpoints directed toward the imperial capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara, the stage of ancient Japanese nation-building.
