Minari Atago Festival
Japanese name:三成愛宕祭
📅 Mon, Aug 24, 2026 - Tue, Aug 25, 2026
About this event
With a 300-year history, this is the largest summer festival in the Unnan region. Following the historical anecdote from the mid-Edo period where 'young people assembled scaffolding and pasted a castle painted on tannin-treated paper on the eve of the festival to surprise the locals,' a cloth-made 'Phantom Overnight Castle' appears at Atago Shrine. This 'Phantom Overnight Castle' is installed only during the festival period and is brightly illuminated at night, offering an impressive view resembling a real castle towering atop the mountain. In addition, dedicated kagura performances and folk entertainment known as Niwaka are held. On Monday, August 24, parades featuring children's portable shrines (mikoshi) and brass band performances by local students, dedicated kagura, and Niwaka are showcased, followed at night by the Unnan region's premier fireworks display. On Tuesday, August 25, stage events and dedicated kagura will take place. You can enjoy Okuizumo Town's beautiful night scenery together with the fireworks.
