About this event

Held in Nishinoshima Town, the "Mikado Festival" is set around Kuroki Palace to commemorate Emperor Godaigo's escape from the Oki Islands. Recalling the era of 650 years ago, it begins with a Shinto ritual on the grounds of Kuroki Palace, followed by an imperial carriage procession departing from the palace, leading a samurai procession dressed as warriors who contributed to the establishment of the Kemmu Restoration government—such as Kusunoki Masashige, Nawa Nagatoshi, and Nitta Yoshisada—as well as court nobles, court ladies, and shrine maidens in historical period attire. Visitors can also enjoy Dozen Kagura dedications, stage events, Oki folk songs, large-pot food servings, rice cake tossing (mochimaki), raffles, various stalls, and sales of local specialty goods. The "Imperial Carriage Procession" in particular is one of the festival's highlights, and participants from outside the island are also being recruited. The Emperor Godaigo Summit, Emperor Godaigo Tour, and a fireworks display are also scheduled.
