About this event
This memorial performance commemorates the 140th anniversary of the Sagi school of Kyogen tradition in Yamaguchi City. Centering on rarely staged plays by the preservation society, it offers a precious opportunity to experience pieces not often seen. Kyogen originated between the late Kamakura and early Muromachi periods, and its current form was established during the Edo period as ceremonial entertainment (shikigaku) for the shogunate. Along with the Okura school, the Sagi school was patronized by the shogunate; however, following the Meiji Restoration, many were forced out of business. Unable to sustain itself elsewhere, the Sagi school began its tradition in Yamaguchi sparked by the ridge-raising Shinto ritual Noh at Noda Shrine in the 19th year of the Meiji period (1886). This performance is held to celebrate that 140th anniversary. Scheduled plays include "Fumi-ninai," "Nukegara," "Obagasake," "Konbu-uri," and "Onigawara." The venue is the Noda Shrine Noh Theater (in case of rain, it will be moved to the Yamaguchi Prefecture Education Center). Admission is free and no advance application is required.
