About this event
This is the grand festival of Akasaki Shrine in the Fukawa district of Nagato City, which boasts a history of more than 400 years. It originates from dances dedicated in gratitude to the guardian deity of agriculture on the stage of "Akasaki Gaku Sajiki." The festival's main event is the dedication of the "Yumoto Nanjo Odori" and "Akasaki Jinja Gaku Odori," both designated as Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Along with the performance of these traditional dances, street stalls line the venue, making it beloved by local residents and tourists as an autumn festival. It is said to have begun around the first year of the Keicho era (1596) when prayers were offered at Akasaki Shrine during an epidemic affecting cattle and horses, and dances were performed in gratitude after the prayers were granted.
