About this event
Held on Sunday, October 18, 2026, the 32nd Shimanto River Ultramarathon is a grand ultramarathon competition set in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture. The course spans Shimanto Town and Shimanto City, featuring 100km and 60km divisions. A signature feature of the course is that once runners clear the first major obstacle—a mountain pass just past the 20km mark—a magnificent panorama of the Shimanto River opens up before them. From there, the mountainous course descends along the river and crosses two submersible bridges (chinkabashi) that sink beneath the water during floods, inspiring the runners' spirit of challenge. The breeze blowing across the Shimanto River soothes the runners' fatigue, while warm cheers from roadside volunteers and local residents spur them on toward the finish line. In past editions, Shuji Uchishiba set the men's 100km race record with a time of 6 hours 38 minutes 01 second, and Mitsuho Nakata set the women's 100km race record with 7 hours 39 minutes 55 seconds. Entry rights are also offered as hometown tax donation (Furusato Nozei) return gifts, making it an event beloved by many runners.
