Wasshoi Hyakuman Summer Festival
Japanese name:わっしょい百万夏まつり
📅 Sat, Sep 19, 2026 - Sun, Sep 20, 2026
About this event
As a signature summer tradition of Kitakyushu City, the "Wasshoi Hyakuman Summer Festival" has evolved into a celebration where citizens can come together in unity and enjoy. Originating in 1973 as "Matsuri Kitakyushu," it was succeeded as the "Wasshoi Hyakuman Summer Festival" in 1988 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Kitakyushu's municipal incorporation, marking its 39th edition this year. At this major event, which typically attracts over 1.5 million visitors from within and outside the city, highlights abound, including the "Children's Dream Stage" where local children present chorus and dance performances, and the "Summer Festival Grand Gathering" featuring magnificent floats and Yamakasa from the city's seven wards. Additionally, new events tailored for children will be introduced, such as the "Children's Yamakasa Grand Parade!" where elementary school students pull their own original mikoshi. At the venue, numerous gourmet booths and food trucks associated with Kitakyushu will be open, creating a festival that is fun to watch, participate in, and taste. A fireworks display is scheduled for the finale to conclude the festivities. To avoid extreme summer heat, the festival has been held in September in recent years and will take place on September 19 and 20 in 2026.
