About this event
This is the autumn grand festival of Fukae Shrine, also known as 'Okunchi'. Referred to as 'Jinji' (divine ritual), a sacred procession (shinkosai) is carried out. Praying for bountiful harvests and rich catches, young men dressed in yakko (servant) attire of a daimyo lord's procession march ahead of the mikoshi portable shrine carrying haguma (decorative white-hair lances) and other regalia from Fukae Shrine. 42-year-old men in their yakudoshi (critical/unlucky age) carry the mikoshi, and upon arriving at the otabi-sho (resting place), a chigo (children's) dance is performed. Furthermore, fishing boats flying big-catch flags depart for a parade at sea, making it a traditional community-rooted festival. The procession departs Fukae Shrine around 11:00 and marches to the Ocean Okaraya (Minatomachi).
