About this event

This is a special public opening event for the National Special Historic Site "Otsuka Kofun" located in Keisen Town, Fukuoka Prefecture. Otsuka Kofun is a keyhole-shaped tumulus built in the first half of the 6th century, best known for the colorful decorative patterns covering the entire walls of its stone burial chamber. Various patterns—including mounted horses, shields, bracken-frond scrolls (warabite-mon), and triangular patterns—are depicted in six colors: red, yellow, green, black, white, and gray. Numerous horse trappings, weapons, bronze mirrors, personal ornaments, and earthenware have also been excavated, leading to its designation as a National Special Historic Site in 1952. To preserve the murals, the actual tumulus is opened to the public only twice a year, in spring and autumn. The scheduled autumn public opening dates for fiscal year 2026 are Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18. Admission is free. Explanations and exhibits regarding the tumulus are also provided at the Otsuka Decorative Kofun Museum.
