About this event
Designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Fukuoka Prefecture, "Kanda Yamagasa" is a brave and magnificent festival held annually from mid-September through the first week of October. Known as one of the Three Great Yamagasa Festivals of Kyushu, it is especially famous as a "Fighting Yamagasa" where the festival floats violently clash with one another. Held as part of the Shinkosai Festival of Uhara Shrine, this Yamagasa has the rare characteristic of changing its appearance three times during the festival period. Visitors can enjoy the richly varied forms of the floats: "Hiyama" decorated with lanterns, "Noboriyama" splendidly adorned with banners, and "Iwayama" decorated with dolls against a rock backdrop. The colorful floats reaching up to 15 meters in height and the happi coats worn by each district also draw much attention. You can participate in this immensely powerful festival and feel its vibrant excitement firsthand.
