About this event
Held in Kanzaki City, Saga Prefecture, the 'Jobaragawa River Hangi Festival' is one of the three major summer festivals of Kanzaki City. The biggest highlight of this festival is the water event where participants glide across the water riding large washtub-like craft called 'hangi', which have been used since ancient times to harvest water caltrops. Navigating the unstable hangi skillfully toward the finish line in the hangi race makes one feel just like a whirligig beetle or Issun-boshi. At this event, which is rare even nationally across Japan, you can experience the mysterious sensation of smoothly gliding across the water. The daytime portion heats up with water events, while the evening portion features planned stage events and fireworks displays. In addition to the races requiring advance registration, there are events for families to enjoy on the day, offering entertainment for a wide range of generations from children to adults. Set along the Jobaragawa River running north to south through Kanzaki City, this festival offers a unique experience and unforgettable summer memories.
