44th Shimabara Castle Takigi Noh

In the evening into the night, Noh is performed in the light of bonfires against the backdrop of Shimabara Castle, creating a magical atmosphere at the "Shimabara Castle Takigi Noh". Noh is said to have been actively performed during the Shimabara Domain era, and Shimabara Castle houses a Noh theater, with numerous utaibon (Noh librettos) and kyogenbon (Kyogen playbooks) preserved in the Matsudaira Library to this day. Noh eventually spread among the townspeople and farmers of Shimabara as well, leading to the revival of "Shimabara Castle Takigi Noh" in 1983 (Showa 58), which has continued ever since.
