About this event
Held at the nationally designated historic site Nanatsumori Tumulus Cluster in Taketa City, Oita Prefecture, the Nanatsumori Red Spider Lily Festival is an event featuring a cluster of red spider lilies said to number around 200,000. The vivid red spider lilies blooming in abundance across the vast grounds fascinate visitors. These red spider lilies originated around 1954 when local residents began clearing and maintaining the untamed grounds of Nanatsumori Tumuli, after which the wild red spider lilies gradually spread to create today's beautiful scenery. Located along National Route 57, it has good accessibility. It also appeared in a flashback scene in director Nobuhiko Obayashi's film '22-sai no Wakare', making its beauty known to even more people. It is held annually in mid-September, with the best viewing time for the red spider lilies being around September 20. The razor lily (Kitsune-no-kamisori), which resembles the red spider lily, also reaches its best viewing period around mid-August.
