About this event

An autumn tradition of Takanabe Town, the '26th Takanabe Castle Lantern Festival' is one of the leading events in the prefecture, held mainly at the town's symbol, the Takanabe Castle Ruins, and Maizuru Park. About 10,000 lanterns, including stone lanterns, bamboo lanterns, and andon paper lanterns, line the venue, creating a breathtaking sight as each one is lit. Lanterns of diverse designs, handmade lanterns by local children, and unique creative lanterns gently color the autumn night. This festival carries the sentiment of passing down the teachings of Meirindo—a domain school founded by Lord Akizuki Taneshige, the renowned ruler of the Takanabe Domain—to modern times, and the light of the lanterns carries the profound meaning of kindling the flame of spiritual culture, or 'the way of humanity'. The preparation and lighting work spanning several days embodies the warmth and bonds of the local community. At the venue, various stage events will be held, including product exhibitions and food stalls offering local gourmet foods, powerful taiko drumming, brass band performances, and presentations by various groups, creating a night packed with charms unique to Takanabe, a 'castle town of history and culture'. Under the countless lights spreading across the autumn sky of the hometown, you can spend a heartwarming autumn moment.
