About this event
"Sanriku Cinema Journey 2026 Summer" is a wide-area collaborative screening program held along the coastal areas of Aomori, Iwate, and Miyagi prefectures, marking the 15th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. This event screens a wide range of film genres, from trending new releases and works set in Sanriku to classic masterpieces. In particular, a symposium co-hosted with the Hachinohe Institute of Technology titled "Lighting Up the Region from Outside the Movie Theater: Screening Activities in Alternative Spaces in Sanriku" will provide an opportunity for participants to think together about the passing down and exchange of regional culture through cinema, as well as the future of community-rooted film screening activities. In addition, a screening of "Rokkoku Kitchen" and a talk event featuring Yu Takeuchi, who appeared in the film and runs "Dokusho-ya Ikitsugi," will be held in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture. This session will deeply explore the current state of coastal Fukushima, the memories and recovery brought by the passage of 15 years since the disaster, and new forms of regional culture. This journey aims to illuminate the past, present, and future of the region through cinema.
