About this event
Passed down from ancient times in Tono City, the 'Sugawara Shrine Annual Grand Festival' is a historic festival recognized locally as a 'Tono Heritage' site. In particular, the Shishi Odori (deer dance) performed by the Hariyama Shishi Odori Preservation Society, which also appears in Kunio Yanagita's 'The Legends of Tono' (Tono Monogatari), is one of the highlights. There will also be an opportunity to hear a talk by Gaku Tomikawa, who is an author and a dancer of Shishi Odori. In addition, visitors can participate in rituals such as carrying the mikoshi portable shrine or carrying offerings around the shrine grounds. Small food stalls run by local residents will also be set up on the shrine grounds, allowing you to enjoy local flavors. A dedication of Ode Hayachine Kagura will also be held, making it a day to experience the richness of Tono's local performing arts. Participants will receive a complimentary original tenugui hand towel featuring Tono's local performing arts.
