About this event

The Hakodate Citizens' Cultural Festival began in fiscal year 1982 as the "Hakodate Cultural Festival" and was renamed to the "Hakodate Citizens' Cultural Festival" in fiscal year 1990. Through presentations of artistic works and the creation of performing arts, it aims to provide opportunities for more citizens to engage in cultural activities and to foster and pass down culture created by citizens that draws on Hakodate's history and local character. In the stage performance division, uniquely crafted programs produced by citizens—including traditional Japanese music, Japanese dance, modern dance, musicals, opera, and ballet—are presented, drawing large crowds each time. The exhibition division, "Hakodate Art Festival," was founded in 1989 alongside the establishment of the Hakodate City Cultural and Sports Promotion Foundation; it is an annual citizen-participation exhibition open to all residents of Hakodate and surrounding areas. For the fiscal year 2026 Hakodate Citizens' Cultural Festival, the exhibition division will host the "Clear Autumn Hakodate Cultural Association Art Exhibition," "Bundan Autumn Hermitage (Tea Ceremony / Kissa-ko)," and the "Hakodate Art Festival 2026: Sky Conditions." The stage performance division is scheduled to feature "Brilliant Autumn Stage: Traditions," "Hakodate Youth Festival 2026," and "Hakodate Student Theatre Festival Vol. 1: Jyoyato (All-Night Lantern)," among others.
