About this event

"Fukushima Biennale Infinity" is a contemporary art project that has been held biennially since 2004. In its 2026 edition, it reinterprets the long history and regional culture of Futaba District to present new contemporary art. The exhibition period runs from Sunday, August 23, 2026, to Saturday, September 26, 2026. The venues span across the eight municipalities of Futaba District (Namie Town, Futaba Town, Okuma Town, Tomioka Town, Naraha Town, Hirono Town, Katsurao Village, Kawauchi Village). Organized by the Fukushima University Institute for Community Creative Development through Art, venues also include the Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum. This biennale has tied into the traditional culture of Fukushima Prefecture to provide a space where people can widely engage with and exchange around art and culture. Focusing especially on Futaba District in 2026, it aims to create new value by blending local unique culture with contemporary art. As related events, a lecture by Michihiko Yanai titled "Creative Steps Along with Reconstruction" will be held on August 30, and a special fieldwork tour with story-teller Isuke Takakura from the Memorial Museum will take place on August 23. Numerous artworks are scheduled to be exhibited across the municipalities, including at the Memorial Museum venue.
