FY2026 Hitachiomiya City Cultural Properties Public Exhibition: Intensive Bakuryo Airing

About this event

"Bakuryo" is a traditional Japanese event where artworks and books, usually kept carefully in storage, are aired out to prevent insect damage. This event offers the public a rare chance to view precious cultural properties that are not ordinarily on display. At Tatsuno Shrine, a "Hono Yumi-iri" (dedicatory archery ritual) by the chief priest will take place around 11:00 on both days, alongside exhibits of a bow dedicated by Tokugawa Akitake and Sengoku period munafuda (ridgepole plaques). At Amida-in, visitors can view a Kamakura-period Amida Triad Statue (a prefectural designated cultural property) and an Edo-period standing statue of Prince Shotoku. Joki-ji will publicly display a Kamakura-period standing statue of Amida Nyorai and a Muromachi-period standing statue of Prince Shotoku (both prefectural designated cultural properties), open for viewing only on the 8th from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Tanjo-ji will be open only on the 7th from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, exhibiting a seated statue of Ryoyo Shoge, which became a municipal designated cultural property between the Edo period and 2022 (Reiwa 4). Shogin-ji will be open only on the 8th from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, where visitors can see the temple's Sanmon gate (an Edo-period municipal designated cultural property) and the Shogin-ji Kofun (ancient burial mound). Additionally, a chair-based zazen meditation experience will be held at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM (first 30 participants per session). Kabuto Shrine will exhibit a subscription list by Satake Yoshiaki from the Sengoku period (prefectural designated cultural property) and a Minamoto clan genealogy (municipal designated cultural property), with the "Tadoreba Hetareba" market also being held on the 8th. Hosen-ji, Honsen-ji, Mampuku-ji, and Hachimangu (formerly Yoshida Hachiman Shrine) will also display Buddhist statues and artifacts from the Muromachi and Kamakura periods. At the Takabu-juku Okayama Family Residence, the nationally registered commemorative garden Yoko-en and the nationally registered tangible cultural property Kiu-tei pavilion will be open to the public for an admission fee of 500 yen. The Historical and Folklore Museum will host the special exhibition "The Ose Uprising Recorded in History," and the Archives will host an entrance exhibition "The Ose Ikki Recorded in History," both with free admission. A stamp rally will also be held across each exhibition site (with some exceptions), where participants can receive original pin badges and commemorative gifts based on the number of stamps collected.
