About this event
This is information regarding the "17th Shimotsuke Yakushiji Temple Site Egoma Oil Lantern Gathering" published on the official Shimotsuke City website. This event is held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the city's incorporation. It is a modern adaptation of the "Manto-e" (ten thousand lanterns service) held at ancient Shimotsuke Yakushiji Temple, utilizing oil lamps fueled by perilla (egoma) oil just like in ancient times. The perilla oil used in the lanterns is cultivated in cooperation with Minamikawachi Elementary and Junior High School, and lit alongside "Messages to the Future" written by 6th-grade students who participated in the cultivation. Under the moonlight, it is an event where you can reflect on ancient Shimotsuke Yakushiji Temple while enveloped in the ethereal light of the lanterns. Following the opening, opening ceremony, and lighting ceremony, attractions such as ocarina performances, guitar singing, and choir can also be enjoyed. Volunteer staff are also being recruited, making it a heartwarming event created in unity with the community.
