About this event
To commemorate its 20th anniversary, the NPO Ashio Copper Mine Pollution Incident Tanaka Shozo Memorial Museum will hold a commemorative ceremony at the Tatebayashi City Cultural Hall Small Hall on Sunday, October 18, 2026. Doors will open at 12:30 prior to the ceremony. In the commemorative lecture, Professor Emeritus Kunio Anzai of Waseda University will be invited as a lecturer to deeply explore the contemporary significance of Shozo Tanaka's philosophy and movement under the title "Looking Back on the 20-Year Journey of the Ashio Copper Mine Pollution Incident Tanaka Shozo Memorial Museum: Reflecting Now on the Significance of Learning from the Philosophy and Movement of Shozo Tanaka, the Clarion of His Era." The lecture will examine the unyielding leadership of Shozo Tanaka, which was re-evaluated during the period of rapid economic growth as the origin of pollution problems, an analysis of the Yanaka Village abandonment issue from the perspectives of local autonomy and the public, and how the trajectory of his words and actions serves as a guiding thread for us in modern society. Along with reflecting on the museum's 20-year history and honoring its achievements, attendees will explore the significance of learning Shozo Tanaka's philosophy and movement, and consider the museum's challenges and future prospects.
