Takiyama Festival & Special Memorial Service

Japanese name:瀧山祭・特別法要

📅 Tue, Nov 3, 2026

📍 Kawaguchi, Saitama

About this event

At Shakujo-ji Temple in Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture, the "Takiyama Festival" will be held to commemorate the virtues of Takiyama, a senior lady-in-waiting (Otoshiyori) who wielded immense authority in the O-oku (inner palace) of Edo Castle. On November 3, 2026, a special memorial service will be conducted, featuring special worship inside the main hall's inner sanctuary, a sacred maiden dance (miko-mai) dedication, the distribution of limited-edition red ink stamps (goshuin) and protective amulets, and a dedicated performance by traditional Japanese flute player Mizuki Seko. Additionally, there will be a special viewing of Takiyama's palanquin (kago)—which is normally closed to the public—along with the provision of tea, Japanese sweets, and discount coupons usable at the temple festival stalls. It will be a day to reflect upon the life and achievements of Takiyama, who observed the tumultuous Bakumatsu period from within the O-oku and spent the rest of her days in Kawaguchi.
