About this event
"Fairy tales," which have been passed down across eras and regions, are colored with symbolic motifs such as fairies, wizards, forests, and transformations, generating rich images that stimulate the imagination and possessing an enduring and universal charm. These stories have not remained limited to literature, but have integrated into diverse fields such as fine art, theater, design, and fashion, flexibly changing form and taking deep root in our culture. Centering on the world of illustrated books that flourished in Europe from the 19th to the 20th century, this exhibition explores the "modes" living within the imagery of fairy tales. In addition, tracing the evolution of fairy tales' rich imagery that spread mainly across Europe, it unpacks from multiple perspectives of art, design, and fashion how they took on new appearances while resonating with the sensibilities of their times. The world of fairy tales is explored from the viewpoints of illustration, performing arts, and fashion, including Walter Crane's "Cinderella" and "Little Red Riding Hood," stage costumes for "The Blue Bird" designed by Léon Bakst, and an evening dress by Marc Bohan (Christian Dior).
