About this event
The Autumn Festival of Okunitama Shrine is known as the 'Chestnut Festival' (Kuri Matsuri), originating from the founding of the Musashi Rokusho-gu Daitai Kagura in 1737. During the Edo period, high-quality chestnuts harvested in Musashino were presented to the Tokugawa family; because the chestnut harvest season coincided with the timing of Daitai Kagura, it came to be called the 'Chestnut Festival.' A major feature of this festival is the approximately 260 paper lanterns (andon) lit within the shrine grounds. Started in 1925, these lanterns feature dedicated drawings painted by people, creating a magical atmosphere in the autumn evening. Visitors can enjoy an autumn night festival steeped in history and tradition while listening to the melodies of Kagura. Stalls selling chestnuts also line the shrine grounds, serving as a seasonal tradition that heralds the arrival of the harvest autumn.
