90th Anniversary of Birth: Mokuro Kegoro Exhibition

This exhibition commemorates the 90th anniversary of the birth of painter Mokuro Kegoro (1936-2003), who was born in Sakhalin (Karafuto) and raised in Kushiro. His real name was Shinichi Suto. Empathizing with the philosophy of Soren Kierkegaard, he adopted the artist pseudonym 'Mokuro Kegoro'. This exhibition traces the transition of his artistic career, from his early works following university graduation prior to studying in the United States, to his 'Alienated Humans' series produced during his study in the US, and the 'White Fairies' series utilizing calligraphy brushes. It also highlights his aspects as an art critic, art educator, and cultural/social activist. While based in Sapporo, he deeply cherished Kushiro, where he spent his high school years supported by friends; this exhibition reflects on Mokuro Kegoro's art in Kushiro, a place closely connected to his life.
