2026 Senami Grand Festival
Japanese name:令和8年 瀬波大祭
📅 Thu, Sep 3, 2026 - Fri, Sep 4, 2026
About this event
Senami Grand Festival is the annual festival of Senami Shrine, a traditional festival where heroic kiyari-uta (work chants) echo through the area. Following the sakidaiko (lead drums) announcing the start of the festival, 5 festival floats parade through the town. In particular, the leading float of Hama-machi carries the "Kehimaru (Ofune-sama)," originating from the shrine's deity Kehi Okami landing on Senami via sea route from Tsuruga. The floats tour the town until late at night, showcasing heroic and fast-paced festival songs that convey the spirit of a fishing town. The eve festival takes place on the afternoon of Thursday, September 3, and the main festival is held all day on Friday, September 4. For part of the festival, volunteers are also recruited to join local residents as float pullers (oshagiri pullers) and noriko (children riders) to liven up the event. It is a valuable opportunity to feel the atmosphere of a traditional festival firsthand and interact with local people.
