About this event

The Murakami Grand Festival (July 7), one of the three major festivals of Murakami, was once also called the 'Byobu Festival' (Folding Screen Festival) because folding screens were set up to entertain guests. Although opportunities to set up folding screens have decreased today, the 'Castle Town Murakami Machiya Folding Screen Festival' offers free public viewings of numerous precious folding screens handed down through generations in machiya (traditional townhouses) and shops throughout the former merchant town area. Visitors can look into the back of machiya townhouses that are usually closed to the public and take their time admiring various items, including folding screens, cherished folk utensils, and toys passed down by each household. During this one-month period when the town of Murakami turns into something like an art gallery or museum, you can enjoy walking through the town, interacting with the locals, and spending a rich, early autumn moment.
