About this event
The "Echigo Kugamiyama Shuten Doji Procession" is held to honor Shuten Doji, one of Japan's three greatest yokai and the strongest oni (demon), whose birthplace legend remains in Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture. In this event, an oni horde led by Shuten Doji parades toward Shuten Doji Shrine. In Tsubame City, Shuten Doji is not portrayed as an evil entity to be slain, but rather as a hero who grants people's heartfelt wishes. Participants and visitors dress up in oni costumes, join the procession, and pray for the fulfillment of their wishes. Capturing photos or videos of the main event, the Shuten Doji Procession, is believed to bring blessings. Based on local legends, this festival is a unique traditional event that attracts many visitors with its lively atmosphere. Various events will take place throughout "Oni Month" from September 1 to September 30, with the main Shuten Doji Procession held on September 27. The venue is 5866-1 Kugami, Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture. Admission is free.
