Takaoka Manyo Festival - Complete 20-Volume Manyoshu Recitation Gathering

This is an event that conveys the richly surviving Manyo romance to the modern era. On special floating stages set up in the moat of Kojo Park and other locations, over 2,000 people take turns chanting all 4,516 poems across all 20 volumes of the Manyoshu over three days and nights. Popular as a festival associated with the poet Otomo no Yakamochi, visitors can immerse themselves in the profound and mysterious world of Manyo romance. In 2026, it will be held for three days from Friday, October 2 to Sunday, October 4, with 4,516 poems being recited via video and at the venue. At night, video broadcasts on Takaoka Cable TV and YouTube can also be enjoyed. Participation in the recitation is free, but an additional fee applies if you wish to rent Manyo costumes. Advance registration is required to participate in the recitation at the venue; registration typically begins in June and closes as soon as capacity is reached.
