About this event

This sacred Shinto ritual is dedicated during the Spring Grand Festival of Keta Shrine. The grand festival proceeds in the order of the Hoheishi Departure Ceremony, followed by the Mikoshi portable shrine procession, the Niramijishi (Glaring Lion) dance, and the festive lion dance. In particular, the 'Niramijishi' performed in front of the main shrine building is a simple and rare traditional dance accompanied by flutes and taiko drums, where the lion slowly shakes only its head left and right, glaring at the spectators to ward off their bad luck. This dance is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Takaoka City. Held at the beginning of spring, this festival offers prayers for national prosperity, the longevity of the Imperial Family, and the happiness of local parishioners and worshippers.
