About this event
The Hoonko service is a memorial ritual held to express gratitude for the benevolence of Shinran Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu. In Toyama Prefecture, often called the Shinshu Kingdom, it has been actively practiced in a way that closely connects Buddhist rituals with shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine). Ennakakai, a volunteer group dedicated to passing down traditional culture, hopes to provide non-members with the opportunity to experience this ritual and vegetarian cuisine, helping to carry forward Hoonko—an important traditional event in Toyama Prefecture—to future generations. Participants will be served Itoko-ni (simmered azuki beans and root vegetables), which became a staple Hoonko dish because Shinran Shonin was very fond of azuki beans. You will also listen to a Buddhist sermon by a monk, including an explanation of what Hoonko is. Please feel free to join.
