About this event

Held as the autumn festival of Daimon Shrine and Biwakubi Shrine, the "Daimon Hikiyama Festival" is a historic festival established around 1872 (Meiji 5). By day, the floats appear as beautiful "Hanayama" adorned with flower umbrellas; by night, they transform into elegant "Chochin-yama" glowing with lanterns as they parade through the streets. Just before 10:00 AM, the floats from Nishimachi, Nakamachi, and Tamachi depart from Daimon Shrine, cross the Daimon Ohashi Bridge to merge with the Biwakubi district, and make a round trip across the bridge in a truly magnificent sight. The gorgeous, lavishly decorated floats parading across Daimon Ohashi Bridge all at once is a spectacle unique to this festival. The two-wheeled flower float from the Biwakubi district is extremely rare, with only this float and the Nibancho float of Takaoka Mikurumayama existing within the prefecture. The floats, which can be called dynamic works of art, convey the charm of a festival that has walked hand in hand with the history of the Sho River.
