About this event

Counted as one of Hokkaido's Three Great Andon Festivals and known as Hokkaido's only "clashing andon" festival, the Numata Town Yotaka Andon Festival is an elegant and heroic field festival handed down from Oyabe City, Toyama Prefecture, the birthplace of the pioneer patriarch Kisaburo Numata. The festival's greatest highlight is the "butsukeai" (clashing), where massive, highly impactful andon floats—measuring up to 7 meters high, 12 meters long, and weighing 5 tons—violently collide with each other, fascinating many tourists every year. This festival forms a grand picture scroll presented by people clad in brilliant, multicolored costumes, whose heroic presence overwhelms onlookers. In 2026, it is scheduled to celebrate its commemorative 50th edition.
