Nagoya Castle Forest Creation Tree-Tending Tour 2026 in Kiso

To preserve the rich natural environment of the upper Kiso River—which nurtured the Kiso cypress (hinoki) extensively used in Nagoya Castle—for the future, and to promote exchange between upstream and downstream areas, a participatory tour will be held in Kiso Town and Nagiso Town, Nagano Prefecture. Participants will take part in tree-tending activities at "Nagoya Citizens' Forest" and engage in activities to learn about forests and timber on-site. During the tour, participants will experience silvicultural tree-tending (pruning and thinning) in the Nagoya Citizens' Forest and receive instruction from forestry professionals to learn the importance of tending trees to grow high-quality timber and cultivate disaster-resilient forests. After lunch, participants can stroll through Tsumago-juku, which retains the atmosphere of the Edo period, enjoying the ambiance of the historic post town through guided commentary and free exploration. Afterwards, at the Tsumago Townscape Exchange Center, participants will take part in a woodworking workshop under the guidance of artisans, choosing between making a hinoki coaster or hinoki artificial flowers. This tour offers a valuable opportunity to meet people who work in the forest every day, listen to their stories, and work together, learning and reflecting on the roles and importance of forests.
