About this event
"Mt. Fuji Art Festival 2026" is a wide-area art project set across 17 venues in Yamanashi Prefecture, cross-connecting contemporary art, traditional crafts, local memories, and Yamanashi landscapes including Mt. Fuji. Utilizing sites associated with historical figures, historic buildings, art museums, and local cultural hubs as venues, it spans five areas—Kyochu, Kyoto, Kyohoku, Kyonan, and the Fuji Five Lakes. Through a wide-area walking/touring structure, it aims to be a new art festival where scattered cultural assets across Yamanashi can be experienced not as isolated "points" but as a connected "area." The theme is "Inspiration! Experience! Discovery! One Month of Connecting with Yamanashi's Historical Figures and Traditional Crafts Through Art." It spotlights traditional techniques and local culture—such as Koshu Inden (lacquered deer leather), Koshu crystal and gemstone carving, Amehata inkstones, washi paper, and Gunai textiles—positioning them as creative resources linked to new expressions through collaboration with and reinterpretation by contemporary artists. By providing diverse touchpoints—not only viewing exhibitions but also talks, workshops, demonstrations by artisans, local touring, and projects linked with food and local climate—it aims to be an open art festival for a wide audience. It strives to offer Yamanashi residents a chance to rediscover their homeland, visitors from the Tokyo metropolitan area a new option for a weekend cultural trip, and tourists a new travel proposal to explore the culture of all of Yamanashi starting from Mt. Fuji.
