Enshu Fukuda Festival (Rokusha Shrine Festival)

About this event

Said to have begun about 400 years ago to pray for safety at sea and bountiful catches, this lively and heroic yatai (festival float) festival is held annually on the second Saturday and Sunday of October. Residents dressed in happi coats perform dynamic parading and chanting while shouting 'Sorayare' to the rhythm of traditional festival music (ohayashi). This year, 21 luxurious floats (planned) including those from surrounding districts will participate, and all floats will gather on Nakagawa Street around 6:00 p.m. on the 11th. From 1:30 p.m. on the 11th, Shinto rituals and the dedication of the 'Urayasu no Mai' sacred dance will be conducted at Rokusha Shrine. The festival of Rokusha Shrine, the local guardian shrine venerating the protector of the sea, is a pious celebration where the divine and people converse. The main highlight is Nakagawa Street around 18:00 on both days, where 23 floats assemble in an atmosphere overflowing with vibrant energy.
