About this event
The solo exhibition "What the Turtle Carries on Its Back Are the Stars" by painter Mirocomachiko will be held from Friday, July 3 to Sunday, August 30, 2026, at STUDIO 894 Gallery in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture. In this exhibition, Mirocomachiko presents new works depicting invisible presences stirring in the spaces of the natural world, as felt in her daily life in Amami, rendered as "imaginary creatures." Nameless creatures that fly through the sea, swim in the sky, and emerge in the space between light and dark come to life as Seto ware ceramics. On display at the venue are new ceramic mosquito coil holders (kayari-ki), figurines, ceramic plaques, mugs, and more. For her first challenge with overglaze painting on ceramic plaques, she explored expressions distinct from painting by embracing accidental colors and layering born from the firing process. Diamond-shaped ceramic plaques, which Mirocomachiko noted "felt very compatible with living spaces," will also be featured. The titles accompanying the works are another highlight; the exhibition title "What the Turtle Carries on Its Back Are the Stars" was inspired by the shell pattern of a "star tortoise" crafted as a mosquito coil holder. The pieces resonate together to create a story-like atmosphere. On Saturday, July 4, a talk event and gallery tour by Mirocomachiko will take place, where she will discuss the background of her work, the titles, and the thoughts embedded in the pieces. This exhibition lets visitors experience the world of Mirocomachiko as she brings out fresh charm in Seto ware through unprecedented ideas and free expression.
