About this event

This special exhibition focuses on the calligraphy career and influence of Ono no Tofu, a calligrapher who lived about 1,100 years ago. Tofu was exceptionally skilled at handwriting, and his works gained immense popularity among people at the time, serving as models for many. This exhibition introduces in detail what kind of person Tofu was, what kind of calligraphy he wrote, and why he was able to write such wonderful calligraphy. In particular, it spotlights the "transitions" in how Tofu's calligraphy was passed down and written in later generations, exploring the allure of "Wayo no Sho" (Japanese-style calligraphy) created by Tofu. At the venue, Tofu-kun worksheets (for elementary school students) and calligraphy workshops ("Challenge Tofu-kun!" Uchiwa fan making, "First Brush," "This Is How to Use a Brush!", etc.) will also be held, providing opportunities for children and adults alike to touch the world of calligraphy. Guided tours for children by curators will also be conducted to provide a deeper understanding of the exhibition.
