Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine Moon Viewing Festival (Kangetsusai)
Japanese name:住吉大社 観月祭
📅 Fri, Sep 25, 2026
About this event
The Kangetsusai at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine is an elegant dedicatory ritual held on the night of the mid-autumn harvest moon. Following the ritual conducted at the Dai-ichi Hongu (First Main Sanctuary), dedications including waka poetry recitations, haiku chantings, bugaku court dance and music, and the Sumiyoshi Odori performed by children are offered while viewing the full moon rising directly over the arched bridge (Sorihashi). In a mystical atmosphere woven by the arched bridge and the harvest moon, this refined evening event allows visitors to experience Japan's ancient cultural tradition of admiring the moon within the historic precincts of Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine. The sight of reciting poetry and dancing beneath the moon offers visitors a deeply poignant moment.
