About this event
At Horaku-ji Temple, on the 28th of January, May, and September each year, a grand Goma fire ritual is solemnized to welcome the descent of Fudo Myo-o to the purified altar. The flame of the Goma ritual is said to be the light of wisdom, possessing the power to incinerate worldly evils and afflictions of disease. In the great blaze that consumes earthly desires (klesha), prayers are offered for national peace and world tranquility. In this event, the Goma ritual is held inside the main hall starting at 10:00, and the Saito Dai Gomaku outdoor fire ritual is conducted in the temple grounds starting at 13:00. The flames are believed to hold the power to burn away worldly evils and sickness, and prayers for peace across the realm and global harmony are made to the roaring blaze that burns away all worldly defilements.
