About this event

Held annually on October 15 and 16, the Autumn Grand Festival 'Tengu Matsuri' at Shotengu Saiko-ji Temple is a traditional festival handed down in Minoo City. On the evening of the 15th, Yoimiya (eve festival) marks the opening of the festivities. During the day on the 16th, an exorcism ritual takes place where kagura and Tengu visit local homes to perform purifications. On the night of the 16th, the Honmiya (main festival) is conducted, bringing the festival to its climax. While the festival's exact origins remain unclear, records of the event date back to the late Edo period. Many Japanese Tengu legends—such as Karasu Tengu, En no Gyoja, and Sarutahiko—trace their origins to En no Gyoja, and the Tengu of Shotengu Saiko-ji is said to be a manifestation of En no Gyoja. The festival is organized by the festival committee and volunteers from the local fire brigade. On the nights of Yoimiya and Honmiya, Tengu and Kagura (lion dance) perform valiant dances to the resounding beat of drums and spirited chants echoing throughout the grounds. The chant 'Yaramai!!' carries the meaning of 'Dance, go dance!'. The act of Tengu and Kagura chasing and swatting children serves as a ritual to ward off evil spirits; lore says that being swatted by a Tengu helps children grow up healthy and clever, while women patted on the hips will be blessed with children. This Tengu Festival is an important community festival praying for good health and prosperity of descendants.
