About this event
Mando is generally said to be an offering of numerous lights to the god of fire to pray for bountiful harvests and local safety. Atago Daimyojin, enshrined on "Mt. Mando" (260 m) across from the Miyake district, is revered as a deity protecting the village from fire. Every year on the night of August 24, at the signal of a siren, bundles of straw called mando set up on the district's mountain are ignited all at once, revealing the ridgeline in the shape of the figure "8" against the night sky. In addition, "Furi-Mando," where children of the district swing mando around at the eastern and western foot of the mountain, is a must-see.
