About this event
The Todaiji Great Buddha Autumn Festival is held to commemorate Emperor Shomu's imperial edict issued on October 15, 743 (Tenpyo 15), calling to "build the Great Buddha together wishing for the happiness of all living beings." During the celebration, the Rushanabutsu Zoken Hotsugan Keisan Hoyo (memorial service celebrating the vow to create the Vairocana Buddha) is conducted, and Great Buddha hymns are dedicated. In addition, events filled with history and culture are scheduled, including a tea dedication ceremony by the Omotesenke school and celebratory Noh and Kyogen performances dedicated on the Kagamiike Bugaku Stage starting in the afternoon. This festival is an important event that conveys the spirit of the Great Buddha's construction to modern times.
