Beloved as an autumn tradition in the ancient capital of Nara, the Shosoin Exhibition offers a rare opportunity to encounter exquisite treasures preserved and handed down for approximately 1,300 years. Centering on treasured possessions of Emperor Shomu, who ruled Japan during the Nara period, this exhibition features a carefully curated selection of approximately 60 items (including 11 shown for the first time) from the richly varied Shosoin Treasures, ranging from top-tier craftworks of the era to documents reflecting the daily lives of people. Highlights include internationally influenced items such as the "Shikkohei" (lacquered ewer) listed in the "Kokka Chinpo-cho" (Record of the Nation's Rare Treasures) associated with Emperor Shomu, the "Hakururi-no-Hei" (white glass pitcher) crafted around Iran, the "Kogebachiru-no-Kishi" (red-stained carved ivory Go piece), and the "Mitsuda Saie-no-Hako" (painted box with litharge decoration) used to hold offerings during the Eye-Opening Ceremony of the Great Buddha. Furthermore, numerous treasured personal belongings of Emperor Shomu, including the red-stained and blue-stained carved ivory Go pieces, showcase a refined aesthetic sensibility. Items displaying the dignified calligraphy style of the "Bommokyo" sutra and dynamic decorative patterns conveying a mysterious charm transmit the devotional prayers of people from that era. Items related to ancient rush mats (imushiro) investigated in recent years will also be on display, making this an exhibition where visitors can directly sense the living presence of people from the Heijo-kyo era.
