Toshin-hiki Lamp Wick Pulling & Straw Zori Sandal Making Workshop

This is a hands-on workshop for "toshin-hiki" (lamp wick pulling), which has been practiced in Ando Town since around the middle of the Edo period. Currently preserved by the Toshin Preservation Society, the technique of pulling lamp wicks is a designated cultural property of Ando Town. Under the guidance of skilled experts, you can experience the process of extracting wicks—used for oil lamps and traditional Japanese candles—from rush grass (igusa). In addition, a "straw zori sandal making" session, starting from twisting straw together, will also be held. By applying the same method, it is also possible to make cloth zori for indoor use. Both activities are easily accessible for beginners to participate in casually, offering a valuable opportunity to experience the traditional culture of Ando Town.
