Picture Scroll Pilgrimage: Kawakami 33 Sacred Sites Tour

Japanese name:絵巻巡礼 川上三十三霊場めぐり

📅 Sat, Sep 5, 2026 - Sun, Sep 6, 2026

📍 Yoshino, Nara

About this event

A special pilgrimage tour retracing the temples, shrines, and scenes of prayer in Kawakami of that era, as depicted in an emaki (picture scroll) conceived in 1829 (Bunsei 12) by Priest Hakuryu of Unsen-ji Temple. Rather than a standard pilgrimage route, this journey follows the "depicted perspective" captured in the picture scroll. Participants can connect not only with existing sacred sites but also with memories of places that have now been lost. On this tour, participants will make the pilgrimage while viewing actual replicas of the picture scroll, accompanied by an "opening narrative" by the chief priest of Unsen-ji Temple and a mini lecture on "The History and Meaning of the Kawakami 33 Sacred Sites" by expert Associate Professor Eri Yokoyama of Osaka Institute of Technology. Following a picture scroll from approximately 200 years ago and walking this "depicted pilgrimage" that transcends time and space will offer an opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the history and culture of Kawakami Village. It is a 2-day, 1-night itinerary, utilizing Hotel Suginoyu for accommodation. As the tour in June was canceled due to a typhoon, applications are being reopened.
