About this event
Kanji Maeda was a painter born on October 1, 1896, in Nakahojo Village, Tohaku District, Tottori Prefecture (now Hokuei Town), who passed away prematurely in 1930 at the age of 33. His vigorous activity during his short life and the numerous works he left behind hold an important place in the history of modern Japanese Western-style painting. Marking the 130th anniversary of Kanji Maeda's birth, this exhibition primarily showcases cherished works preserved in his hometown. While centering on the pursuit of realism, Maeda formed the '1930 Association' through interactions with contemporary painters and energetically released works featuring new experiments. In this exhibition, along with an overview of his entire painting career, works by colleagues who shared activities with him, such as Yuzo Saeki, Zentaro Kojima, and Katsuzo Satomi, are also introduced.
